  16. <p>     An African Homeland for the Palestinians?
  17. </p>
  18. <p>     Thanks to a huge infusion of money and armaments from
  19. friendly Islamic nations like Iran and Libya, the fundamentalist
  20. government of Sudan seems to be on the verge of winning its
  21. 10-year civil war against the Sudanese People's Liberation Army.
  22. But there may be more than simple Muslim solidarity behind the
  23. aid to the continent's largest country. According to
  24. African-based diplomats, the Arab states think the southern
  25. region of Sudan, now held by the rebels, could serve as a
  26. possible homeland for the Palestinian diaspora. Observers note
  27. that Yasser Arafat was returning to Libya from a meeting with
  28. Sudanese leaders when his plane crashed in a sandstorm two weeks
  29. ago, nearly costing the P.L.O. chairman his life.
  30. </p>
  31. <p>     A Mystery Without an Ending
  32. </p>
  33. <p>     Despite objections from some of his staff, Iran-Contra
  34. independent counsel Lawrence Walsh plans to end his six-year
  35. investigation into the scandal and thus leave a number of key
  36. questions unanswered. The special prosecutor favors closing out
  37. the inquiry before it becomes a partisan issue in the
  38. presidential campaign. But Craig Gillen, Walsh's deputy, wants
  39. to pursue allegations that former Secretary of State George
  40. Shultz was regularly briefed by a top aide on secret
  41. intelligence material about hostage negotiations. Walsh's
  42. decision also means it is unlikely that any legal action will
  43. be taken against Donald Gregg, U.S. ambassador to South Korea.
  44. Gregg was national security adviser to George Bush, then Vice
  45. President, during the arms-for-hostages swap and has long been
  46. identified as a top target of the probe.

  48. <p>     Darman's on the Perk Patrol
  49. </p>
  50. <p>     Just when it seems that Richard Darman can't get any less
  51. popular in Washington, the White House budget chief goes ahead
  52. and very publicly renounces his privileged use of the
  53. chauffeured car that comes with the job. What's more, Darman is
  54. advising fellow Cabinet appointees to give up "portal to portal"
  55. service and restrict the use of motor pools in their agencies,
  56. or else his Office of Management and Budget will do it for them.
  57. Presidential aides agree that the push against perks is a smart
  58. move that will allow Bush to continue railing against
  59. congressional excesses. Says a senior campaign adviser:
  60. "Complimenting Darman makes me sick, but he is far ahead of
  61. everyone else on this issue."

  63. <p>     Next Gig: A Duet with Elvis
  64. </p>
  65. <p>     Lead singer Freddie Mercury died of AIDS last November,
  66. but record sales of his rock group Queen are still going
  67. strong. A reissue of the band's quirky 1975 single Bohemian
  68. Rhapsody (currently featured in the hit movie Wayne's World) is
  69. a best seller in both the U.S. and Britain, while three of
  70. Queen's old albums are now on the Billboard oldies chart. This
  71. week many of the singer's rock cohorts will gather at London's
  72. Wembley Stadium for "A Concert for Life," which will be
  73. televised worldwide to benefit AIDS research. One of the people
  74. who anticipated the huge resurgence in Queen's popularity was
  75. Mercury himself, who is said to have recorded enough new
  76. material with band mates before his death to fill three albums.

  78. <p>     "Mother Teresa? My Name's Gotti..."
  79. </p>
  80. <p>     It's hard to find a better reference than Mother Teresa,
  81. who has issued clemency appeals on behalf of both S&L swindler
  82. Charles Keating and murderer Robert Alton Harris. In a letter
  83. to Keating's trial judge, Mother Teresa noted that the financier
  84. had donated $1 million to fight hunger, and she has publicized
  85. her objection to the death penalty in Harris' case. But even a
  86. "living saint" can't help lost causes: Keating drew 10 years in
  87. prison; Harris is to be executed this week.

  89. <p>     Toll-Free Style
  90. </p>
  91. <p>     Jerry Brown certainly has a keen sense of the latest in
  92. political fashion, and now supporters can adopt one of his
  93. sartorial trademarks. This turtleneck proclaims your
  94. anti-Establishment attitude--and might attract a few $100
  95. donations in the process.
